The 22% Federal Flat Rate
Bonuses and other supplemental wages are typically taxed at a flat 22% federal rate for withholding purposes. This is separate from your regular income tax brackets.
Important: Withholding ≠ Final Tax
The 22% is for withholding purposes only. Your actual tax liability is based on your total income and tax bracket. You may get a refund or owe more when you file your return.
Types of Supplemental Wages
- Bonuses (performance, signing, retention)
- Commissions
- Overtime pay (sometimes)
- Severance pay
- Back pay
- Taxable fringe benefits
Two Withholding Methods
- Percentage Method (most common): Flat 22% federal rate (37% for amounts over $1 million)
- Aggregate Method: Combined with regular wages and taxed at your marginal rate
State Supplemental Rates
Many states also have flat supplemental withholding rates. States without income tax (TX, FL, WA, NV, etc.) won't withhold any state tax from your bonus.
